"Sport for life. That is what it is all about."
Those are the words of Vicky Macqueen, founder of didi Rugby.

My brother Phil's nephew, Ioan, plays didi Rugby every week in Swansea. Ioan is two and a half years old. Ioan can often be seen donning a Welsh flag as a cape, with ball-in-hand or discussing with his uncle how he is going to be a future star at the Principality Stadium. Ioan is one of 70+ members of didi Rugby Swansea.

didi Rugby is the brainchild of former international rugby player, Vicky. A few years ago Vicky faced a life-threatening infection. It was during her time in recovery in intensive care that Vicky was told by her doctors that her fitness levels saved her life. This is the inspiration behind didi Rugby. Teach the young the importance of health and well-being to inspire a lifestyle that could well save their life.

Teach the young the importance of health and well-being to inspire a lifestyle that could well save their life.

There are nearly a dozen didi Rugby regions throughout the UK developing fundamental skills of children aged 18 months to six years old. But, most importantly, and as verified by future Welsh International, Ioan, these skills are being developed whilst there are enormous smiles on the faces of the littl'uns taking part.

I caught up with the Robyn Lock, who is spear-heading didi Rugby in Wales as the founder of didi Rugby Swansea. Between Robyn's day job and developing didi Rugby in Wales, Robyn also manages to find time to represent the Ospreys on the field. So I was grateful to be able to grab a rare free moment to chat about didi Rugby joining our GO Rugby family.

"didi rugby is not just for children, it's for parents and local rugby clubs too! didi rugby is there to help a community become more connected."

  • Who is involved?

didi Rugby is an organisation dedicated to helping children across the UK develop their fundamental skills and become confident, happy, healthy children. didi Rugby offers classes for children aged 18 months to six years old designed to develop balance, agility and coordination as well as embedding core values such as team work, sportsmanship and respect.

  • How did it start?

didi Rugby is growing across the UK but was started in Hinkley by Vicky Macqueen. Vicky has shared her passion and determination to get children moving around and being healthier with others.

  • Who is it for?

didi Rugby is not just for children, it's for parents and local rugby clubs too! didi Rugby is there to help a community become more connected.

  • What is it about rugby that makes it so suitable for kids of a didi age?

Rugby is not just about being big and tackling hard. Rugby is a sport for anyone. I've met my best friends through rugby and have had the best moments of my life thanks to rugby. We want to help children become more confident sports people not just rugby players. We want them to have positive experiences associated with being active so they lead an active life.

"I've met my best friends through rugby and have had the best moments of my life thanks to rugby."

  • What is your favourite on-field moment so-far?

My favourite on-field moment so far has got to be playing in the Principality Stadium for Swansea University Women's Rugby Club in the Welsh Varsity. Playing at the Principality was reward enough, but we went on to beat Cardiff and showcase women's rugby... I felt such a buzz after the game and knew in that moment that I was part of something special.

  • What is your favourite off-field moment so far?

My favourite off-field moment was launching didi Rugby in Swansea in December 2017. It was a huge leap to take but I couldn't ignore my passion or my gut any longer. I have never regretted doing what I do and I love every minute I am coaching or working on future didi Rugby projects.

"It was a huge leap to take but I couldn't ignore my passion or my gut any longer."

  • What are you looking forward to next?

I am looking forward to expanding into Neath, Port Talbot and Llanelli areas in September. It's a big step to take but I am looking forward to spreading the didi love across more of Wales. Our future is so exciting!

  • What does the future of didi Rugby look like?

didi Rugby is growing rapidly over the UK, as well as in Australia and New Zealand.  We couldn't run didi Rugby without the dedicated, passionate, caring parents, grandparents and carers. So I am looking forward to creating a partnership that gives something to these guys!

"It is going to be a fantastic end-of-season party for didi Rugby!"

  • What are you looking forward to with the GO Rugby partnership?

We are so excited to have the platform that the GO Rugby Festivals give us. Not only to share didi Rugby with new people, but also because it is going to be a fantastic end-of-season party for didi Rugby Swansea! Who knows, maybe one day we will have a Swansea, Neath, Port Talbot and Llanelli didi rugby team entered into the adults festivities!

  • Will we see you with your boots on in Cardiff?

You'll find me painting faces and running fun games and obstacles courses in the didi Rugby zone. I'll save my boots for Ospreys pre-season!

How can we not be inspired by Robyn, Vicky and the didi Rugby community? I personally can not wait to see them in action at our 2018 festival and in years to come. Join us on Saturday 25th August at Llandaff for your didi to join in the fun. Or, if nothing else, to see what Ioan has decided to wear as a cape this time...
